Everybody wants to be a rock star. Whether we admit it or not,
there's that little part of us, sometimes deep down, that wants to be
the center of attention, the one all the girls are screaming for, the
one wiping the sweat off our forehead and yelling, "Thank you, New
York!"
But of course, these things don't just happen. It usually takes years
for a band to see any indication of commercial success.
Lancaster-based band 404 seems to understand this. Guitarist Mike
Kealey explains, "Everyone in the band is fully committed and we
definitely want to take it to the next level and quit our day jobs,
but for now, we have bills to pay and everything like that." Kealey
adds, "With the band being so young, we have a lot to learn, but
everyone's head is in the right place and we're heading in the same
direction."
404 began when bassist Paul Baker and drummer Ron Snyder placed an ad
for a female vocalist. Kealey says, "Paul and Ron were in and out of
several bands and they had lost their male singer and guitar player.
They had decided to try a female vocalist." Enter lead vocalist Kat
Rees. Three weeks after recruiting Rees, Kealy joined the band, and a
few months later, keyboardist Adam C. followed suit.
Considering 404 has only been together for a year, the band is solely
doing covers right now. Kealy simply states, "Expect some Top 40 and
some retro covers.
"Right now we're looking to put together a cover set and start
hitting up some of the clubs in the area and start making a name for
ourselves," he says. "We have been working on original music - we're
still kind of creating it as we go. We are only a year old and in
that time we spent a lot of time working on covers. Right now, we are
a cover band with aspirations to begin doing original work."
It's all about baby steps for 404. However, a year after its
inception, 404 is already flirting with the idea of creating an
album. "We do have aspirations of putting an album together, but
right now we're not selling any CDs. We're kind of learning cover
songs, getting out, having a good time, trying to get a following,
and then as time goes by, we'll start working on original music."
Remember, only you can help make 404 the rock stars they aspire to be.
