The guys of 20 on Red feel as though forming a band into a successful unit
can prove to be somewhat of a gamble. "That's how we look at a band," says drummer
Chris Klinger, laughing, "to put five guys together who aren't going to kill
each other."
They do carry their fair share of luggage. Klinger, formerly of local bands
Jerk Media and TenPenny, decided to start anew and founded 20 on Red in June.
Fellow TenPenny member Jon Gockley followed his lead and joins Klinger on guitar,
BJ Huss of Negative Space fame is on guitar and vocals, and Ken Stauffer (bass
and vocals) and Glen Hurst (lead vocals and guitar) round out the group.
But Klinger believes Lancaster-based 20 on Red is heading in the right direction,
playing clubs throughout York, Lancaster and Allentown. Their cover band format
revives cover tunes in their true, original form, or as Klinger describes, "the
way they were meant to be, and I think people appreciate it." The concentration
is on radio tunes similar to those you'd hear on 105.7 the X - from Blink 182
and poppy bands to harder-edge covers from Godsmack, Saliva, and Limp Bizkit.
"With a cover band, you can only take it so far," admits Klinger, "but I want
to at least take it to the grandest scale we can. We want to play bigger clubs;
we aren't interested in playing bars or smaller venues."
According to Klinger, originals are in the process of being created. The plan
is to finish out the year, come out with five really good originals, record
them on an album (for release mid next year), and mix them in with the live
show. "We would love to play originals totally, and build up a following based
on those originals," he says. However, he adds that having both originals and
covers in the set list works in their favor in the different markets. For additional
